Open letter to the public – I just read a story about the
person who wrote the Macklemore Grammy winning song Same Love. She said the
song was influenced by her real life conflict about coming to terms with being
gay (age 17 discovery) and what she was being told by the church.
I’m going to attempt to keep this as simple as possible but
before I do I going to share a bit about my own “coming of age” story. I use
coming of age because I was always out it’s just that I had no understanding of
sexuality and no points of reference for guidance and acceptance. I've been
that “tomboy” for as long as I can remember…I’m sure many of the kids I grew up
(FaceBook friends) with will concur. I have also been the object of scorn from adults
who were supposed to guide and support…I've heard the words, bulldagger, faggot
and funny from the lips of adults which in turn was mocked by their children.
Now to the lesson…scripture says “…study to show thyself
approved…” so if this is the case you should know that the heavily used, persecutory
scripture cited from the book of Leviticus (18) is misused; taken out of
literal and historical context. But, I’m not even going to get all into a
theological seminar. I’m going to stay very basic….Christians are quick to say
“In Him there is no failure” to deny the number of gays or to dismiss their
love is to say that God made a mistake and that these folks are flawed because
they don’t think and act the way YOU do. How is it that you’re willing to
accept gays in your choir and as your choir directors and secretly harbor
resentments and openly teach that heaven is not for them?
Let’s stop seeking the ways to divide and get about the
“business of OUR FATHER”
