Reminiscing BY: KB © 12.22.14

As the new Year approaches we all have a tendency to look back and place everything under the category of fond memories…Reminiscing, that can often be a dangerous word and a dangerous process…I was thinking about all the songs that use the word or a variant…Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth, Common, Mary J Blige…even Streisand with memories.

Memories are a beautiful thing; I love the fact that I can search my mind and a smile comes to my face. I love the fact that a though can bring a certain level of happiness. But what I want to discuss is when that same process can get you into trouble.

Let’s go to the Bible and see what it says:
Luke 9: 62    Jesus replied, "No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God."

Philippians 3: 13    Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead,

Isaiah 43:18-19 “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland.

Genesis 19:17   As soon as they had brought them out, one of them said, "Flee for your lives! Don't look back, and don't stop anywhere in the plain! Flee to the mountains or you will be swept away!"

Genesis 19:26- 27   26 But his wife, from behind him, looked back, and she became a pillar of salt. 27 Now Abraham arose early in the morning and went to the place where he had stood before the LORD;…

What?!!!   Is the Bible really saying that reminiscing is bad? That’s a yes and no answer. Allow me to translate as best I can – if you’re working toward viable change, to be of use in the kingdom, you cannot look or go back to what He bought you out of!

This unhappy woman, says the Rev. T. Scott, 'looked back,' contrary to God's express command, perhaps with a hope of returning, which latter supposition is favoured by our Lord's words, 'Let him not return back: remember Lot's wife.' She was, therefore, instantaneously struck dead and petrified, and thus remained to after ages a visible monument of the Divine displeasure.

If you want to reflect on something for the New Year reflect of what God is calling you to Read Proverbs 14. Look back to see if you were all that God called you to be. Look back to see where you could have been a better person, responded better, loved more….look back to where you've failed friends and disappointed loved ones…….remember that we as humans are wired to blame others but what about the YOU in the equations?!!!!!!
