Remarkable Constraint BY:KB © 5.3.15

I was speaking to a group on Friday and I had to use the illustration about falling….I taught it’s not the fall that hurts it’s the sudden stop! As I think about this more and more…I keep coming to the word “constraint” I took my thought deeper and placed it in a spiritual context, The gospel is a constraint. Now before I get a bunch of hoorah and harangue I’m using the word constraint in the context of an antonym  - freedom!

As I was studying my lesson plan prior to facilitating the group I realized that I am constrained (contained, kept safe) by the gospel. I also noted the fact that constrained is used in the literal interpretation as well….there I just some things I just cannot do.

I recently had the (can’t do) hit home hard….I was recently accused of doing something that I did not do; it was a case of “telephone” (you know the game where people tell a story and you see how the story changes…well, the story was GREATLY embellished and several, who have a flair for the dramatic, poured gasoline on the story and lit the match. By the time the story got back to me it was a flaming pile and the folks involved were in a blood lust. To be honest, when the truth was finally revealed, my flesh (Earthly, worldly self) wanted to slap the hell out of everyone who chose to run with the insanity but I chose not to give in to my anger.


There’s a freedom that comes with learning to deny your flesh….I learned who was going to cover me. I learned what I am capable of in times of distress. Most important, I learned that I don’t have fight every fight. I learned that forgiveness is a practice

Man Oh Man!!!
I’ve had at least a million thoughts run through my head and none of them reflected godliness….seriously, I have had some things that came at me with the force and the destruction of a Tsunami. I wanted to give in to my flesh and fuss, cuss and spit. I wanted to call out all the folks that contributed to the situation. I wrestled with my anger and disappointment for about two months; I can’t say that I am free and clear of the resentment, there’s still some residue, but, I came to myself and realized that I didn’t get in the position of discomfort by happenstance!
I had to go off the grid and get lost in my thoughts to really assess the damage and the lack of self-discipline that it took to get deep in the mire. The situations taught me some invaluable life lessons…the enemy truly walks with us, touching people (think of the Denzel Washington movie- Fallen)….people who call you bae, bruh, friend, sis and all the while smiling and quoting scripture to keep you off balance. I learned I have to watch the actions because sin cannot exist in the true actions of God.

I have a responsibility in my mess….2 Timothy  2:14-16       Remind them of these things, and solemnly charge them in the presence of God not to wrangle about words, which is useless and leads to the ruin of the hearers. Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth. But avoid worldly and empty chatter, for it will lead to further ungodliness,…

Trust and believe the lesson has been learned….I rather walked near the fire and get a little scorched that be consumed and destroyed by the flames. I pat and damper down the glowing embers, nurse my wounds and continue to study and learn…..

Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner? BY: KB © 5.20.15

2 Corinthians 4:4       In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

Whew! I've been off in my own “stuff” for a minute….I got caught up in poor choices and had to deal with the poor outcomes. I stopped writing because I got beat up by my conscience and my convictions because when all was said and done I knew the outcomes were a result of me stepping outside of the will of God. I dealt with the immediate things some months ago but I have to say SIN is like asbestos, it leaves residue and sometimes you have to handle the residue with more caution than the initial incident.

My plight has made me keenly aware of the craziness in my space and it made me look at how we allow ourselves to entertain the enemy. My case is that I often allow myself to get depleted and I don’t rely on God to provide rest and restoration; I then throw pity parties and become bait for wolves. My personal vulnerabilities are then accentuated by the fact that some of the folks in my circle are just as vulnerable yet they present the façade of a solid fortress.

I have allowed God to change my vision and I now see manipulative megalomaniacs, false piety, and the seriously wounded (life support wounded), sadly these are often in one person….
and more often than not these are the people in your circle, these are the people who we have taken into our confidence, these are the people we go to for support.

Be careful, watch, look to see how people conduct themselves in their everyday. Look to see how they treat people when they aren't doing/ can’t do anything for them. Listen to their message and ask if there a hidden agenda on the back end of it. Listen for humility.

Christianity does not mean that forgiveness requires you to divorce your common sense….(like NA/AA tells people not to run the inventory of others)….what it means is that you let go of the hurt and pain, let the other party go in peace but you look at your own culpability and also what vulnerability allowed YOU to get ensnared

Cohesion and Corruption BY: KB © 5.12.15

Wisdom, compassion, insight….I had an experience last week that just sent me into something. I guess the entire thing threw for a loop because I had been having very complementary and amiable conversations with the individual involved.

To give you a brief history of the conversation: The person is somewhat of a grassroots advocate for autism but also speaks on political issues. She had been commenting on the riots in Baltimore and referred to the rioters as thugs and had begun to receive negative feedback on her choice of words. (Now please note that this individual does not live in the US and has a very harsh judgment and critical response for certain individuals. Black rage has never been questioned or considered by this individual)

At any rate…I took exception to the phrase she posted “you African Americans” noting that it was a phrase lumping everyone into one category. I could care less about the word thugs but that she was in a dangerous place of judging all by the actions of a few. She then went on to say that “maybe she should use the “N” word in lieu of thugs to appease people” That was enough for me….I was floored that she could slide easily from you people to the N word….I true racist was revealed. The thread then went on to blame the victim, cite black crime statistics and the like. I “unfriended” with the quickness. I also had a conversation with another person who was appalled by the postings.


The whole thing showed me just how people can rally for a cause and become completely blind and insensitive about others as long as their needs are getting met. The situation also illustrated how ignorance is as cohesive as it is corruptible; people bonding in destruction.

The Heart Of The Matter BY: KB © 5.6.15

I was so busy this morning that I really didn't put the time in reading my usual devotionals; I skimmed over them and got the basic gist. My commute was the usual craziness; I saw a person wearing dark clothing coming into head on traffic on a blind curve. Further up the hill on the way to work I see a truck backing up, on a one way and then crossing 4 lanes to come to a complete stop; someone is darting back and forth delivering papers from the truck. All the while I’m driving I’m thinking I have a million things to do today. I should be busy for the better part of the day….but I just had to stop to write this because it was dropped into my spirit….you ready for this? Here goes…

You ever meet people who are so busy in their self-aggrandizement's that they fail to see that they’re alienating people? Those very same people have serious conflicts in the majority of their interpersonal relationships; they will also argue with you until the cows come home because they have to be right! I often find myself wondering “What exactly is it that they hear because most people aren't saying they’re wrong they are merely expressing an opinion.” My thoughts then go to a place of pity…how sad it must be to live in such a prison….so fragile that they HAVE to prove themselves and the constant barrage tells you that whatever imaginary/real standard of measure is NEVER good enough. I live content in knowing that I put forth an effort and asking the Lord to honor my work. Whenever I find myself slipping into the trap of thinking I have to prove myself I go back to the scripture  Colossians 3:23     Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters,

Getting back to the people who are constantly proving and in reproof, I tend to think of the situation as a heart problem Proverbs 23:7     ….For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he….

Who does this person believe they are? What do they think of themselves and why do they believe it? The answers to these questions will often explain the person’s words and actions.
Another scripture that came to mind was Proverbs 4:23     Watch over your heart with all diligence, For from it flow the springs of life.

I used to get really irritated by this passage because I mistakenly believed that there was no need to guard the heart if I was truly a loving person.  I thought it was a bit hypocritical to enter into a situation guarded. I now get the richness of this verse…it means that not everyone is going to respect YOUR vulnerability and heart wounds go deep and effect the way you deliver the word and love….so you must guard the core of YOUR life and love. All of which explains the type of person I initially questioned….

Looking Back BY: KB © 5.5.15

OK, so my thoughts for today….I have been all over the mental map this morning. I got thrown for loop when one of my devotional pages had a broken link and I had to figure out how to post the message. It’s funny how the little things tend to derail your train of thought….

So here’s what I am currently ruminating on……the concept of looking back. I put it in terms of something I heard- a car analogy. The windshield is the largest window in the car for a reason. It enhances your vision and shows you a perspective so you can gauge progress. The rear view is somewhat smaller because it shows what may be creeping up on you but not to the point where it occupies your attention and consumes your view. The rear view also shows a progression and a vision of the things you left behind. The side mirrors show you what you've aligned yourself with being ever so mindful of the blind spot.

Now, if you think about it, the car is a vehicle built for progression. I say this to note that life is also a vehicle for progression; constantly looking back can cause just as many problems in life as it can in driving.

No writing would be complete without me using a scripture reference: Genesis 19:23-26
23 By the time Lot reached Zoar, the sun had risen over the land. 24 Then the Lord rained down burning sulfur on Sodom and Gomorrah—from the Lord out of the heavens. 25 Thus he overthrew those cities and the entire plain, destroying all those living in the cities—and also the vegetation in the land. 26 But Lot’s wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.

Lot’s wife….looked back and was returned to the elements. The Hebrew for “pillar” refers to a strong hold or a sentry, that is, something set to watch over something else. The imagery of Lot’s wife standing watch over the Dead Sea area—no life can exist on this spot, even today—is a very strong reminder to us not to look back or turn back from our progression in faith and to abide unwavering in Christ.

Long story short…if you continue to look back or go back…you will never find life!

What just happened? BY: KB © 5.4.15

My great nephew, not quite 2 years old, loves to dance; like a modern day Martha Graham he just feels the music and the follows his body. He does this crazy thing with his arm that just cracks me up. I have to tell you that the songs he chooses to feel have me a bit distressed. Right now, his current favorite is uptown funk (Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars)  I love the song and his various dance moves crack me up but yesterday I got to hear and see some of his favorite dance track videos and I was really distressed…not so much by him dancing but that one day he’s going to grow up enough to understand and maybe embrace the troubling aspects of theses seemingly harmless videos.

The first video I saw was Beyonce….now there are some people who call me a hater because I often decry Beyonce and her presence…but I have to say that I won’t back down…that the people who hold her up as some type of feminist icon have NO CLUE as to what feminism is about. I personally believe that she has set feminism back with her deplorable over-sexualized performances. She reminds me of the old Blaxsploitation films where the Black woman is nothing more than a sex object….my question is are you really in a position of power when you’re your own pimp? You’re still being used!

I saw 7/11 for the first time yesterday and I was appalled; first, that someone would take the time to film this garbage and try to pass it off as a song and video. Second, the “come and get it” style of burlesque bump and grind dancing. (Her mother must be so proud…) Third, you can look at the video and Beyonce’s eyes and see that there is obviously a substance involved in such an illicit performance.

The song selection went from Beyonce to someone named Jidenna and the song Classic Man. The song is catchy and the video is cool but I was left taken aback with the liberal use of M.F.  I know we had Prince’s Black album along with Darlin’ Nikki and Sexy M.F., we had Too Short and several other controversial artists for our times….but that doesn't mean we had to buy it and listen to it like it was the thing to do. I know how to swear….I often refer to it as my family’s second language but as a person who claims and clings to a higher calling and purpose I cannot continue to use and accept the insanity of others. Now, don’t get me wrong, I am not claiming perfection or being better than I can and will often revert back to the familiar and common when I’m hard pressed, what I’m talking about is maturation and evolution. I’m talking about expanding the mind and the horizons of your life to seek better and to improve on what our forefathers prepared for us.

Think about these things the next time you listen to some crazy lyrics….think about this the next time you hear a brother call another brother the N  word. Think about it the next time you hear a woman claim an alter-ego or embrace the word bitch.

So. I’m sitting here reading my devotions and posting pics, as I do every morning when I come across a pic that says to surround yourself with what you want to become and soon you’ll find yourself on that path (I’m paraphrasing)

I’m currently wrestling with this concept because I want to be known for my faith and commitment to God and for the most part I surround myself with like-minded folks. Now, here’s my plight, I know we all sin. I know we all fall short. I know we all mess up and get caught up….believe you me I have made some EPIC blunders this year and it’s only May! But, I also take ownership of my failures and defeats and offer them to God, asking, begging, praying for help. The majority of the people I know are caught up with title, position, ego and more often than not cannot see past their own situations. I catch myself reverting from time to time but I use the word to draw me out…just as others use the word to keep themselves locked into a position….often claiming righteousness….Here’s a tip to help people understand when they are off the path….when you begin to use the word to justify YOUR position rather than to seek understanding and compassion….YOU are off the path. When YOU mention YOU and YOUR accomplishment more than you speak of God….you are off the path. When YOU are unyielding and lack humility….you are off the path.

I don’t want to be a part of this congregation but more often than not I find myself standing alone, battling compromise and deflecting unnecessary barbs of conflict.

When we get caught up we tend to  forget two very important passages of scripture:
 Matthew 6:33   But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

2 Chronicles 7:14   if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

Both Scriptures indicate that are struggles and conflict are often a result of our inability to give God His due.


As I evolve my surroundings evolve and my conversation should evolve. I need to work a little harder on what I allow in my space and what I allow my ears to entertain.

The "N" Word Friend or Foe?

I wrote this piece a while back...but, due to some recent events and conversations in my life, I am choosing to repost it 


Nigger (the word), a brief history!

The history of the word nigger is often traced to the Latin word niger, meaning black. This word became the noun negro (black person) in English, and simply the color black in Spanish and Portuguese. In Early Modern French niger became negre and, later, negress (black woman) was unmistakably a part of lexical history. One can compare to negre the derogatory nigger and earlier English substitutes such as negar, neegar, neger, and niggor that developed into its lexico-semantic true version in English. It is probable that nigger is a phonetic spelling of the white Southern mispronunciation of Negro.

No matter what its origins, by the early 1800s it was firmly established as a degenerative nickname. In the 21st century, it remains a principal symbol of white racism regardless of who is using it. Social scientists refer to words like nigger, kike, spic, and wetback come from three categories: disparaging nicknames (chink, dago, nigger, etc); explicit group devaluations ("Jew him down," or "niggering the land"); and irrelevant ethnic names used as a mild disparagement ("jewbird" for cuckoos having prominent beaks or "Irish confetti" for bricks thrown in a fight). Racial slurs (over time) have victimized all racial and ethnic groups; but, no American group goes through as many racial nicknames as Blacks: coon, tom, savage, picanniny, mammy, buck, sambo, jigaboo, buckwheat are some. Many of these slurs became fully traditional pseudo-scientific, literary, cinematic, and everyday distortions of African Americans. These caricatures, whether spoken, written, or reproduced in media, and material objects, reflect the extent, the vast network, of anti-black prejudice.

The word nigger carries with it much of the hatred and disgust directed toward Black Africans and African Americans. Historically, nigger defined, limited, made fun of, and ridiculed all Blacks. It was a term of exclusion, a verbal reason for discrimination. Whether used as a noun, verb, or adjective, it strengthened the stereotype of the lazy, stupid, dirty, worthless nobody. No other American surname carries as much purposeful cruelty. The following shortlist is important information on the words use and meaning.
Niggerish: Acting in a lazy and irresponsible manner.
Niggerlipping: wetting the end of a cigarette while smoking it.
Niggerlover: Derogatory term aimed at whites lacking in the necessary loathing of blacks.
Nigger luck: Exceptionally good luck, emphasis on undeserved.
Nigger-flicker: A small knife or razor with one side heavily taped to preserve the user's fingers.
Nigger heaven: Designated places, usually the balcony, where blacks were forced to sit, for example, in an integrated movie theater or church.
Nigger knocker: Axe handle or weapon made from an axe handle.
Nigger rich: Deeply in debt but flamboyant.
Nigger shooter: A slingshot.
Nigger steak: A slice of liver or a cheap piece of meat.
Nigger stick: Police officer's baton.
Nigger tip: Leaving a small tip or no tip in a restaurant. Nigger in the woodpile: A concealed motive or unknown factor affecting a situation in an adverse way.
Nigger work: Demeaning, menial tasks.

Nigger (as a word) is also used to describe a dark shade of color (nigger-brown, nigger-black), the status of whites that mix together with Blacks (nigger-breaker, dealer, driver, killer, stealer, worshiper, and looking), and anything belonging to or linked to African Americans (nigger-baby, boy, girl, mouth, feet, preacher, job, love, culture, college, music, etc). Nigger is the ultimate American insult; it is used to offend other ethnic groups. Jews are called white-niggers; Arabs, sand niggers; or Japanese, yellow-niggers. Americans created a racial hierarchy with whites at the top and Blacks at the bottom.

The most interesting facet of this last poll was the number of people who are growing tired of hearing the word 'nigga' being bantered about.. I recall growing up in the Bronx and constantly having that word being tossed about by the roughneck Irish kids who resided near Van Courtland Park, Johnson Ave in Riverdale, Washington Heights and South Broadway in Yonkers.. There were many a days that some serious racial confrontations broke off-usually as a result of that N word being thrown about.. It surprises me how candidly the word gets used today.. especially by those who aren't Black..Like KRS-One says.. 'Now we got white kids calling themselves nigga'... What hurts even more is you have this ridiculous assertion being spouted by some brothers who will point out that there's a big difference between the word 'Nigger' and 'Nigga'. Hence when I was growing up I was being called 'Nigger' which is offensive.. but when some white or Asian kid comes rolling up to me today talking about 'What's up my Nigga'? I should embrace him because this kid is down with hip hop culture... Even sadder is you have some brothers who take this word and flip it so that it empowers them..So now nigga is a good thing... We've internalized so much negativity it's ridiculous..
This sort of mentality reminds me of the way some of us celebrate the success of a hip hop concert... Here you have kids running up and saying things like "Man there was only one fight during the concert'.. or 'Only one person got shot'.. Normal, civil, intelligent behavior is so rare nowadays.. that we actually give props to something that should be an everyday occurrence..What compounds this situation even more is that we have some very prominent individuals within hip hop who have literally 'blessed' the word nigga..

My Questions: When did the “N” word shift from a derogatory hate filled term to one of endearment? I didn’t get that memo. My question to any self –respecting African American, Black, Negro, Colored person is: Did your grandmother or mother give birth to a nigger? If you are unsure ask them. Hopefully you will hear of the struggle to break free from the word. You will hear how people fought and died to be seen and thought of as first, human and then equal. You will hear how innocent men, women and children were killed in the most heinous ways because someone white wanted to make a point. 

Spike Lee drove the point home in his movie Bamboozled….the movie asks the question Are we so caught up in the game of “clockin’ dollars” that we are willing to sacrifice our souls? Are we willing to continue accepting and laughing at the caricatures of  our people? Paul Mooney describes the UPN Network as U-You P-Picka N-Nigger because of it’s modern day minstrel line-up. It’s time to wake up and shake up America and resume our rightful place.

1.   WE WANT freedom. We want power to determine the destiny of our Black Community.

WE BELIEVE that black people will not be free until we are able to determine our destiny.

2.   WE WANT full employment for our people.

WE BELIEVE that the federal government is responsible and obligated to give every man employment or a guaranteed income. We believe that if the white American businessmen will not give full employment, then the means of production should be taken from the businessmen and placed in the community so that the people of the community can organize and employ all of its people and give a high standard of living.

3.   WE WANT an end to the robbery by the CAPITALIST of our Black Community.

WE BELIEVE that this racist government has robbed us and now we are demanding the overdue debt of forty acres and two mules. Forty acres and two mules were promised 100 years ago as restitution for slave labor and mass murder of black people. We will accept the payment in currency, which will be distributed, to our many communities. The Germans are now aiding the Jews in Israel for the genocide of the Jewish people. The Germans murdered six million Jews. The American racist has taken part in the slaughter of over fifty million black people; therefore, we feel that this is a modest demand that we make.

4.   WE WANT decent housing, fit for the shelter of human beings.

WE BELIEVE that if the white landlords will not give decent housing to our black community, then the housing and the land should be made into cooperatives so that our community, with government aid, can build and make decent housing for its people.

5.   WE WANT education for our people that exposes the true nature of this decadent American society. We want education that teaches us our true history and our role in the present-day society.

WE BELIEVE in an educational system that will give to our people knowledge of self. If a man does not have knowledge of himself and his position in society and the world, then he has little chance to relate to anything else.

6.   WE WANT all black men to be exempt from military service.

WE BELIEVE that Black people should not be forced to fight in the military service to defend a racist government that does not protect us. We will not fight and kill other people of color in the world who, like black people, are being victimized by the white racist government of America. We will protect ourselves from the force and violence of the racist police and the racist military, by whatever means necessary.

7.   WE WANT an immediate end to POLICE BRUTALITY and MURDER of black people.

WE BELIEVE we can end police brutality in our black community by organizing black self-defense groups that are dedicated to defending our black community from racist police oppression and brutality. The Second Amendment to the Constitution of the United States gives a right to bear arms. We therefore believe that all black people should arm themselves for self- defense.

8.   WE WANT freedom for all black men held in federal, state, county and city prisons and jails.

WE BELIEVE that all black people should be released from the many jails and prisons because they have not received a fair and impartial trial.

9.   WE WANT all black people when brought to trial to be tried in court by a jury of their peer group or people from their black communities, as defined by the Constitution of the United States.

WE BELIEVE that the courts should follow the United States Constitution so that black people will receive fair trials. The 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution gives a man a right to be tried by his peer group. A peer is a person from a similar economic, social, religious, geographical, environmental, historical and racial background. To do this the court will be forced to select a jury from the black community from which the black defendant came. We have been, and are being tried by all-white juries that have no understanding of the "average reasoning man" of the black community.

10.   WE WANT land, bread, housing, education, clothing, justice and peace. And as our major political objective, a United Nations supervised plebiscite to be held throughout the black colony in which only black colonial subjects will be allowed to participate, for the purpose of determining the will of black people as to their national destiny.

   WHEN, in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bonds which have connected them with another, and to assume, among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the laws of nature and nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.

   WE HOLD these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. **That, to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed; that, whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it, and to institute a new government, laying its foundation on such principles, and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety and happiness. ** Prudence, indeed, will dictate that governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and, accordingly, all experience hath shown, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. **But, when a long train of abuses and usurpation, pursuing invariably the same object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government, and to provide new guards for their future security. **
